Is Bronchitis Contagious?
Bronchitis is a disease that causes problems in breathing. It is an inflammation in the wind-pipe which is linked to the lungs. The initial symptoms of bronchitis include discomfort in the bronchial tubes. This is followed by mucus accumulation that clogs the air-passage space and in turn causes breathing-trouble.
Bronchitis can be of two chief kinds:
- Acute Bronchitis-It is usually caused due to cough and cold and stay for a short span of time.

- Chronic Bronchitis-It is caused due to severe cough and cold along with mucus deposits in the air-passage. It stays for a long time and often causes lung-infection. It involves major respiratory problem and cold and fever.
Going through the causes and symptoms of bronchitis, it becomes important to analyze whether bronchitis is communicable.
Bronchitis is Contagious
Bronchitis is very much contagious. It is communicable since it is caused by transfer of viral infection that can affect any healthy person and cause serious breathing disorders. The following are important points regarding bronchitis and its contagious characteristics:
- Bronchitis is highly communicable since the virus can get transferred very easily and quickly when a patient sneezes or coughs.
- Initial stage of the disease show swelling in the air passage.
- When a person sneezes or coughs the bacteria spreads and affects others around.
- If an infected person neglects the disease by evading medication, bronchitis can lead to pneumonia which becomes even more severe and sometimes even fatal.
Treatment
Bronchitis is a contagious disease that spreads with every sneeze of an affected person. Given the pace of its spread, the infection needs immediate treatment to avoid further complications and respiratory deterioration. Bronchitis be it acute, chronic or of any other kind, it is transmittable. So, prevention is better than cure. The following are ways by which the infection can be prevented:
- Consumption of antibiotics as per doctor's prescription offers fast relief but that happens mostly in case of acute bronchitis where antibiotics fight viral infection. Most asthmatic patients contact acute bronchitis which has to be treated with antibiotics.
- Maintain hygiene around you.
- If you have bronchitis, use a towel while sneezing or coughing.
- Consume lot of fluids. Make sure you drink adequate litres of water on a daily basis.
- Proper bed rest is an utmost requirement for every patient because their body need to relax and revitalize all lost energies.
- Cough medicines provide easy relief when you get a severe cough-attack.
- If you are feeling uncomfortable because of mucus, let the mucus come out so that you get rid of the irritation from your lungs.
Thus it can be concluded, that bronchitis can be a common infection affecting cold-prone individuals but its effects are very painful and disrupts normal life because of continuous discomfort and weakness. It is an extremely contagious disease which needs immediate treatment in order to prevent its spread.
The best way to treat the infection is to stop it from spreading to other people and this can be done only when the person affected undertakes proper precautions and medication on his part.
